MP3 (MPEG Layer 3 Audio)

MP3 (MPEG Layer 3 Audio) is an audio codec developed by Fraunhofer and standardized by MPEG. It was the first widely deployed audio codec to support high-quality audio — suitable for reproducing music with good quality, rather than just speech. More modern codecs (AAC, Opus, and others) have replaced it in most use cases
