On2 Technologies

Published At: March 5, 2024

On2 was a video codec development company until its acquisition by Google in 2010. On2 created some of the most notable and widely used codecs including:

  • VP3 - Now called Theora, a popular free and open source codec
  • VP6 - The most widely used codec for Flash video before H.264 was introduced
  • VP8 - The original codec for the open WebM video format

The founders of Mux previously partnered with On2 in 2008 to build one of the earliest cloud-based transcoding services, FlixCloud. When Google acquired On2, FlixCloud was shut down, and the Mux founders went on to build Zencoder, another cloud encoding service and the eventual leader in the space.
